Divi Southwinds scuba diving - a reason for your vacation
The crystal clear waters off the white sand beaches of Barbados are perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving, with visibility between 80 to 98 feet for most of the year. Scuba diving is popular throughout Barbados. The fringes and reefs found off Barbados blossom with healthy sponges, coral and plant life. The barrier reefs, located 1/2 - 2 miles from shore contain large coral heads which form the habitat for thousands of beautiful fish. Larger organisms are also found on these reefs, feeding on the smaller fish. The Hawksbill turtle can also be found on these reefs. Fringes and patching reefs are found closer to shore and have smaller coral formations and more abundant plant life then the barrier reefs. These reefs are home to Sea Horses, Frog Fish, Giant Sand Eels and many other marine creatures. Wrecks form fascinating habitats for marine life and Barbados has several excellent sites for wreck diving. Carlisle Bay, with 200 reported wrecks, and the Stavronikita, located at Folkestone Marine Park, are two of the most popular sites. Barbados is ideal for year-round diving but is probably best in the summer months. The visibility ranges from 40 to 70ft and the water temperature is a consistent 80 degrees F. The cost of your scuba diving or snorkeling excursion will depend on several factors. First of all, before you can scuba dive, you must be a certified diver. To become certified you have to take classes with a licensed scuba instructor, which can cost around $350(USD) for a week long certification course. Once you become a certified diver, you will have to pay for dive runs, which cost around $50(USD) to $55(USD) for a one-tank dive and $70(USD) to $80(USD) for a two-tank run. You should budget for the cost of the equipment rental. Most dive runs will include the cost of your scuba equipment in the cost of the overall dive, but you may have to pay extra for snorkeling equipment
